Fellowship Opportunity: Racial Justice Fellow

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NCLF) seeks a full-time attorney to complete a two-year Racial Justice fellowship, working out of our office in Raleigh. The Racial Justice Fellow will work on issues involving racial profiling and immigrants’ rights, employing strategies involving community outreach, public education, litigation and general legal advocacy. The ACLU-NC is the state affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union.

Because this position will require community outreach and organizing throughout the state, applicants must have a willingness and ability to travel often and to maintain a flexible work schedule.

The Racial Justice Fellow will work under the primary supervision of the Legal Director.

Duties include:

1) Networking with allies and building coalitions to achieve the goals of the ACLU-NCLF concerning racial justice and immigrants’ rights;
2) Coordinating a coalition of activists and community leaders working to monitor and track incidents of racial profiling by law enforcement and to develop strategies to prevent such abuses;
3) Coordinating the ACLU-NCLF’s education and outreach efforts concerning racial justice and immigrants’ rights;
4) Actively seeking out opportunities to do community outreach to enhance civil liberties awareness throughout the state of North Carolina;
5) Researching civil liberties issues concerning racial justice and/or immigrants’ rights that arise, and preparing legal memoranda, demand letters, advocacy letters, complaints and briefs;
6) Presenting selected cases to the Legal Committee and the Board of Trustees for evaluation and authorization of litigation;
7) Under the supervision of the ACLU-NCLF’s Legal Director, working with cooperating attorneys and the Legal Director to develop litigation and/or civil rights complaints concerning racial justice and/or immigrants’ rights issues;
8) Developing and maintaining relationships with the national ACLU, its projects, and other state affiliates;
9) Preparing necessary dockets and reports for the public, the membership, the Board and the ACLU-NCLF’s senior staff;
10) Maintaining the requisite CLE requirements (at the ACLU-NCLF’s expense);
11) Speaking at public forums, meetings and events on various civil liberties topics and granting interviews to the media, as directed by the Legal Director;
12) Performing other related duties as assigned by Legal Director.

These are not all-inclusive, but these are the priorities set by the Board of Directors and the Executive Director.

Qualifications:
· A passion for civil liberties and a commitment to organizing
· Demonstrated experience in coalition building and community organizing
· J.D. with at least 1-2 years of relevant legal experience in racial justice and/or immigrants’ rights work
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Excellent research, writing and analytical skills
· Demonstrated ability to develop and implement litigation strategies
· Strong self-motivation and ability to manage multiple deadlines
· Substantive knowledge and understanding of constitutional law and civil liberties issues
· Excellent organizational and case management skills; meticulous attention to detail
· Experience working with diverse communities, clients and coalition partners
· Membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar or admission to the North Carolina Bar within one year of hire
· Willingness to work beyond the 9 to 5 hours of the normal workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events
· Proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred

Compensation: Salary $40,000 – 45,000, depending on experience and qualifications; Excellent benefits including: paid vacation and sick leave, health and dental insurance, life and disability coverage, 401(k).
