The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina (ACLU-NC) is looking to hire an experienced Communications Director to join our senior leadership team in Raleigh. We are looking for a dynamic strategist, storyteller, and manager to guide all of the organization’s communications work. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Communications Director participates in strategic planning, helping to set organizational goals and priorities. Who We Are

Founded in 1965, the ACLU of North Carolina, an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union, is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that stands as the state’s guardian of liberty – working in courts, the General Assembly, and communities to protect and advance civil rights and civil liberties for all North Carolinians. The ACLU of North Carolina brings together litigation, legislative, advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQ equality, reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants. With nearly 30,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has a staff of more than 20 people with a central office in Raleigh and a satellite office in Charlotte.

What You’ll Do

You’ll help us protect and advance the rights of all North Carolinians by:

  • Building and directing a strong, well-designed, well-defined strategic communications plan that empowers members, supporters, and communities to help advance the organization’s work in priority issue areas and campaigns, leveraging earned and paid media, digital organizing tactics, social media strategies, and storytelling.
  • Helping to recruit, hire, train, develop, and motivate and evaluate the work of the members of the communications department.
  • Collaborating with colleagues in the legal, policy, organizing, and development teams, as well as with national ACLU communications staff, to ensure communications strategies serve the ACLU-NC’s programmatic goals.
  • Working in partnership with relevant staff to produce, edit, and approve public-facing materials including press releases, public statements, blog posts, op-eds, action alerts, fact sheets, talking points, letters to the editor, supporter emails, social media copy, and print publications.
  • Serving as the organization’s primary point of contact with media outlets and responding promptly to daily media requests. 
  • Ensuring that the ACLU-NC tells the story of our mission through compelling, effective, and values-based narratives that center people impacted by our issues and are tailored to reach specific audiences.
  • Providing training, preparation, and feedback to other team members for public speaking engagements and media interviews, and serving as a spokesperson for the organization when needed.

Who You Are

The ideal candidate will be ready to hit the ground running to expand the organization’s position as a leading source of information about constitutional rights in North Carolina, as well as galvanize support for ACLU initiatives. Our other “must haves” are:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU, racial equity, and the ACLU’s priority issue areas, including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQ equality, reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants.
  • Significant professional, managerial, and leadership experience in strategic communications and media relations including:
    • Experience serving as a spokesperson for campaigns or organizations.
    • Experience writing, editing, and producing effective communications materials for publication in print and online.
    • Experience effectively leading and developing individual staff and teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout North Carolina and occasionally to other states for conferences, training, and other communications-related work.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work under pressure with short and long-term projects simultaneously; ability and desire work in a fast-paced, changing environment, and conform to shifting priorities, demands and timeline; and be responsive to rapidly to significant developments.
  • Experience with digital media including email marketing, social media, website administration, and other web-based content.
  • Superior writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise and persuasive materials with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proven commitment to equity and inclusion and a personal approach that values all people and respects differences in regard to race, ethnicity, nationality, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance.

The salary range for this position is $82,000 - $95,000 depending on experience.
