Summary

Join ACLU of NC and El Pueblo for a virtual town hall to learn more about what SB 153 will mean for North Carolinians.

On June 24, the North Carolina General Assembly voted to override the Governor's veto of SB 153, the anti-immigrant so-called “Border Protection Act.” This bill expands statewide cooperation with ICE by requiring several state law enforcement agencies to enter into 287(g) agreements, among other provisions.

Spanish interpretation will be available.

By forcing SB 153 into law, lawmakers are dismissing ICE's documented abuses and the harm its agents have inflicted on our communities. At a time when federal immigration agencies face growing bipartisan calls for transparency and accountability, North Carolina lawmakers made clear that ongoing civil rights violations are not enough for them to rein in ICE.

Rather than addressing real needs like passing a state budget, delivering teacher raises, and halting corporate tax cuts, our lawmakers are scapegoating immigrants. SB 153 builds on other anti-immigrant laws, including HB 10 and HB 318. We deserve better, yet our lawmakers have shown a willingness to put our communities at risk for political gain.

It is critical to prepare our communities to protect ourselves and understand the potential harms of this bill.
