ICE OUT OF NC! Petition Text Bank

Register here. Across our state and across the country, reckless ICE and CBP operations have inflicted fear and lasting harm on immigrant families and entire communities. Raids, detentions, and so-called “enforcement actions” have turned neighborhoods, homes, workplaces, schools, and places of worship into sites of terror. These agencies operate with impunity, separating families, detaining people in inhumane conditions, and violating the constitutional rights of citizens and non-citizens alike. All North Carolinians deserve safety, dignity, and freedom from fear, not militarized federal agents that target our neighbors, destabilize communities, and erode public trust in government. No one should live under constant threat simply because of their immigration status. In response to this, we have created a petition that is demanding that NC elected officials: Publicly condemn the abusive and dehumanizing practices of ICE and CBP; Refuse collaboration with ICE and CBP operations that harm our communities, to the extent permitted by state law; Work toward ending detention, deportation, and enforcement systems rooted in cruelty and racialized violence. But we need your help to raise awareness of this petition and get signatures to send a message: Silence is complicity. Bold leadership is needed now to uphold the rights of all North Carolinians, regardless of immigration status. Join us for a text bank during which we will be reaching out to people to let them know the petition exists and that we'd love for them to sign it! When: Tuesday, March 31, at 7 pm Where: Virtual via Zoom. Zoom link will be provided closer to March 31 What You Will Need to Text Bank: A laptop with internet connection or a phone with strong cell service/Wi-Fi (you will NOT be using your own phone number)

Virtual Town Hall

Register here to attend. In the wake of ICE and Border Patrol terrorizing our communities in November 2025 — and amid ICE's continued presence in our state — it is critical that we all understand our rights, our neighbors' rights, and what we can do to protect each other. Every North Carolinian deserves full protection of their rights. No one should have to live in fear because of their immigration status. Join us, alongside Carolina Migrant Network, for a statewide virtual Town Hall. We will discuss immigrants' rights, your rights when interacting with ICE and Border Patrol, and our ongoing litigation challenging federal immigration agencies' overreach.

60th Anniversary Hootenanny

The ACLU of North Carolina is turning 60, and we’re throwing a hootenanny! Join us as we celebrate six decades of defending civil liberties with an evening of music, movement, and advocacy. This one-of-a-kind event will bring together 300+ community members, leaders, and changemakers for a night of connection, reflection, and impact. A hootenanny is a gathering rooted in Southern tradition — a lively mix of music, storytelling, and community spirit. By embracing this tradition, we honor our Southern roots and invite you to share in a warm, authentic celebration of our collective commitment to justice. The evening will feature: A special archival exhibition showcasing three powerful works of art highlighting six decades of courageous advocacy and key milestones in the fight for civil rights. Recognition of distinguished honorees whose tireless work has advanced civil liberties. Inspiring words from local and national leaders. Live performances by The Southern String Band, Rissi Palmer, and Husbandos. Participatory art to inspire and connect us. Together, we’ll honor our past, look ahead to the future, and reaffirm our shared commitment to building a more just and equitable North Carolina.

Displacement by Design: A Conversation with Deborah Archer, Donna Carrington, and Dr. Henry McKoy

Eminent legal scholar and ACLU Board President Deborah Archer is coming to town to discuss her recent book Dividing Lines: How Transportation Infrastructure Reinforces Racial Inequality. In her book, Archer explores how, in the wake of Jim Crow's fall, highways, roads, sidewalks, and transit systems have continued to operate as tools of segregation strategically designed to isolate Black communities and preserve inequality. Drawing connections across cities including Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis, New York, and more, she highlights the persistent structural divide encoded in our built environment. This discussion is especially resonant here in Durham, where the legacy of economic displacement and infrastructure-driven erasure continues to shape the landscape. We invite you to a panel discussion moderated by ACLU of North Carolina's Executive Director Chantal Stevens, featuring: Deborah Archer, ACLU President and author of Dividing Lines Dr. Henry McKoy, founder of Hayti Reborn, working to preserve Hayti's history, protect its residents from gentrification, and promote Black-owned businesses Donna Carrington, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment Fund, a Durham-based organization advancing housing stability, financial security, and economic opportunity alongside people experiencing homelessness and poverty Together, they will explore how history, policy, and community action intersect — and what it will take to build a more just and inclusive future in Durham and beyond.
