All North Carolinians have a right to privacy without billion-dollar technology companies turning our movements into products for profit. And yet, automatic license plate reader (ALPR) cameras are rapidly expanding across our state, allowing law enforcement to track people's movements in real time without a warrant, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing. This kind of mass surveillance puts our civil rights and civil liberties at risk. But communities are fighting back and winning. After residents raised serious privacy concerns, Pittsboro and Hillsborough ended their ALPR contracts. Across North Carolina, more community members are organizing to push back against these invasive surveillance systems and demand stronger privacy protections.
