RALEIGH – The North Carolina Senate today passed Senate Bill 359, a bill that targets health care providers who provide safe and legal abortion care with the threat of a serious criminal penalty.

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina is opposed to the bill.

“This extreme anti-abortion bill is a plain attempt to bully and scare abortion providers so that they stop providing the care their patients expect and need,” said Susanna Birdsong, Senior Policy Counsel for the ACLU of North Carolina. “We can all agree that politics should not drive the standard of medical care. Politicians are not medical experts, and this proposal has no basis in medical science. This one-size-fits-all legislated standard of care not only interferes with medical practices but demonizes doctors and denies them the ability to provide the care that is necessary, compassionate, and appropriate under the circumstances.”
