House Bill 261 will increase criminal penalties for people who have been previously removed from the U.S. after entering the country without legal permission or documentation, even when their crimes have nothing to do with their immigration status. The bill also creates a new sentencing enhancement for all North Carolinians if the person is found to have committed the crime to benefit or promote other criminal activity.
