RALEIGH, N.C. – Governor Stein’s vetoes of both HB318 and SB 153 is a critical victory for immigrant communities across North Carolina. These bills would have legitimized racial profiling, deepened collaboration between NC law enforcement and ICE, and terrorized immigrant families across the state.

We commend Governor Stein for doing the right thing in the face of political pressure. His vetoes reflect his commitment and courage to protect North Carolinans from harmful, fear-driven legislation.

This action comes after relentless organizing from directly impacted communities, advocates, and allies across the state. People who mobilized because they knew exactly what was at stake. This victory belongs to them.

We urge every legislator in the North Carolina General Assembly who values families, public safety, and civil rights to uphold the Governor’s vetoes. Our communities showed up to defeat these bills. We expect our elected officials to do the same.
