Annual Meeting -Western North Carolina Chapter

October 21, 2023 @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm

The Western NC chapter of the ACLU of North Carolina cordially invites you to an Annual Celebration to present the Racial Justice Coalition of Asheville with the Evan Mahaney Champion of Civil Liberties Award.

Annual Celebration
Saturday, October 21, 3-5 p.m.
Southside Community Center
285 Livingston Street, Asheville, NC

The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

The Racial Justice Coalition is a broad-based alliance of individuals and organizations committed to addressing systemic racism and state-sanctioned violence against Black people and those most impacted by poverty, criminalization, and mass incarceration.

Executive Director Rob Thomas is a formerly justice-involved individual with first-hand experiences of the inequities that he now works passionately to unravel. He believes true transitional justice requires redistribution of power and fights to place vulnerable and disenfranchised community members in a decision-making position over processes where they are the most impacted demographic.

This honored award is named for Evan Mahaney, a past long-time president of the WNC Chapter of the ACLU of North Carolina.

In addition to this year’s celebration, we will also host our annual meeting at this time, during which new chapter directors will be elected. Any ACLU member residing in Western North Carolina is eligible to cast their vote.

If you have questions about the event, please reach out to Sam Katz at [email protected].
